MINDSET: What Is It?

“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed no hope at all.” — Dale Carnegie

What Is Mindset?

Our MINDSET can be defined as a set of assumptions, methods, or notations that are held by an individual or a group of people.

And these assumptions, methods, or notations are firmly established.

There is a strong incentive to continue to accept or adopt prior behaviors, choices, or tools.

Our MINDSET consists of our thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs.

Because these elements then work in conjunction to help us form the assumptions, methods, or notations.

They dictate the way we engage with the environment around us.

Once established, our mindsets tend to be firm and are difficult to uproot, though they can be challenged.

We can adopt new mindsets in time via the acceptance of new thoughts.

And the formation of new attitudes and beliefs.

Mindset

Thoughts

Our thoughts are conscious cognitive processes that happen independently.

Processes such as judging, reasoning, and deliberation are all a part of thought formation.

So, these processes are the first steps in a mindset being formed.

As we reason through ideas that are proposed we come to conclusions.

These conclusions then lead us to form judgments and then thoughts are formed.

The thoughts then run within our minds as we go about life.

From our thoughts, we adopt attitudes, beliefs we accept, and actions we choose.

Attitudes

Our attitudes are ways of thinking and feeling about something.

Therefore, our attitudes tend to be learned.

They teach us to evaluate things we encounter in a particular manner.

Built upon our thoughts, our attitudes stem a bit deeper and are a bit more challenging to alter than thoughts.

The way we feel tends to be something far more personal and deeply connected to us.

The attitude we hold shapes the way we approach people and scenarios.

This leads to significant differences in outcomes depending upon the specific attitude and situation.

Limiting beliefs

Beliefs

Beliefs are feelings of certainty we develop regarding something,

They are what will determine the choices we go on to make.

Even more deeply rooted than attitudes and thoughts, beliefs are our core values, and they inform us of what we do.

The way you believe shapes how you act.

It shapes who you keep in your sphere of influence.

It determines where you go,

Every aspect of your life is touched by your belief system.

Most people tend to choose those things that align with or support their beliefs.

This means that anything or anyone who comes into opposition to those beliefs is sure to face some sort of challenge.

Typically for most people, something that opposes their beliefs or core values is treated with dismay or indifference.

Action

Actions

The mindset which is composed of thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs leads to actions.

The choices we make stand on the back of the prior areas mentioned.

When we think in a certain way, we form an attitude based on that thought.

We then develop a deep core belief tied to that attitude, everything we do will stem from that place.

It is the combination of our THOUGHTS, ATTITUDES, and BELIEFS that formulate our MINDSET.

The fact that it is trifold in such a way highlights how firm and significant our mindsets can be.

It also highlights why mindsets can be set in stone and how challenging it can be to alter a mindset.

Though this can pose a challenge, changing a mindset is possible.

To do so requires intentionality, effort, and commitment of time and energy.

By back-tracking and addressing first the thoughts, then the attitudes, and finally the beliefs that shape a mindset we can make meaningful changes to it.

Self-awareness is also necessary as a means of first identifying and then assessing the thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs we have as well as what influences us in each of these areas.

Armed with that information we can cultivate a mindset that promotes wellness and progression, as well as supports us in reaching our goals in the end.
